Lord of the Flies
Chapter 5
Beast from Water
Jack
Forget Ralph, I want to be chief
I suddenly hear the blow of the conch in the night. I run over to the meeting place. When we all get to the meeting area Ralph starts talking about how we need to start tightening up the rules. He says that this will not be a meeting of laughs but of strictness. The first thing that he talks about is how no one helped build the shelters. How everyone did help on the first but then how only 4 people helped on the second and how only him and Simon worked on the third. I bring up that I was hunting during they were making the shelters. Then Ralph gets mad because he thinks that hunting is stupid. He yells this and that and how the shelters are more important. Then he starts talking about how we thought about using coconut shells for water but we only used that idea for a week or two. After that he moves on to the designated toilet area. How no one uses it anymore. It was a smart idea how the waves wash it out. Then he restates the importance of the fire. Then we have this huge debate on whether or not there is a “beastie”. We actually had a vote on if there were ghosts. I just said that if there was a beast that me and my hunters would just kill it. Then a small boy says that the beastie might live in the water. Fatty actually agrees with me on the idea of no beastie. Then Ralph starts to give up because now everyone is commenting on how there could be a beastie. Then I suddenly relies that I should be leader not him. I start to tell this to Ralph by arguing with him but then Fatty backs him up. I start to yell at Fatty then I run off. Everyone runs after me. The only people left that don’t come with me is Fatty, Ralph, and Simon. We start jumping and screaming when we hear another louder howl. The piercing scream silenced us all. Then we saw it was Percival.
