The Woman Warrior, LC post #1

"You must not tell anyone," my mother said, "what I am about to tell you. In China your father had a sister who killed herself. She jumped into the family well. We say that your father has all brothers because it is as if she had never been born."
~Page 1, Maxine’s Mother

The significance to this quote is because it is the first line in the story and it draws you in. When you first read this you think about what is going to be going on later in the story and that is what makes a good first line in a book.

There is no direct connection to me because my dad doesn’t have a sister that killed herself, but I have seen some people in movies that kill themselves and my dad has three sisters so I could imagine what it could have been like, but not fully imagine because what happens in the movies isn’t as real as real life.

"I watched powerful men count their money, and starving men count theirs." ~Page 30, Maxine

I think that the significance of this quote is that she was very poor and could not afford a lot while there were some families that were rich and greedy. That is why they left for America, so that they could make money. In America there were a lot more opportunities then there was there.

My personal connection to this is that this is true in real life. There are some rich and greedy men out there in the world and there are some people that are struggling to keep food on the table. I have seen both kinds of these people in this world.

Quote 1 Responce/Comment:
I considered writting this quote down as well. I agree with you, this line really does draw you in and want to make you read more. It felt to me as if we would be getting told stories of Maxines' life.. turns out that we are learning her past just at the same moment she is.

Quote 2 Responce/Comment:
I chose this quote as well and for some of the same reasons. Also I think that it showed the different society classes in history and how we even have it now. I also think that it shows how Maxines family really struggles to make a living.

Nice work!

I agree. I wanted to read more and more. This looks like it will be a fascinating memoir. I like in the second quote how it reflects on her situation. It shows some hardships she had to go through.
